What is Zakat?
Zakat is one of the five pillars of Islam and a fundamental act of worship. It is a mandatory charity that every eligible Muslim must give to help those in need. The term Zakat means purification and growth. By giving Zakat, a Muslim purifies their wealth and earns the pleasure of Allah.
Zakat is obligatory on every adult, sane Muslim who:
- Owns wealth equal to or above the Nisab threshold.
- Has possessed this wealth for one full lunar year (Hawl).
The Nisab value is based on the price of gold or silver:
- Gold Nisab: 87.48 grams of gold (approx. 7.5 tola)
- Silver Nisab: 612.36 grams of silver (approx. 52.5 tola)
If your wealth equals or exceeds this amount, you are required to pay Zakat.
Example:
If you have PKR 1,000,000 (after deducting liabilities), your Zakat is: 1,000,000 × 2.5% = 25,000 PKR
If you have PKR 1,000,000 (after deducting liabilities), your Zakat is: 1,000,000 × 2.5% = 25,000 PKR
